My connected gym, is not connected, yet

After trawling the internet for some time, I still can't seem to get a defnititve answer for my project requirement.

The requirement is to have accelerometer sensors connected to gym equipment and the movement data to be sent to the cloud for analysis. Something like below:

+ 50 - 100 accelerometer sensors
+ Connecting to hub (Imp wifi? BTLE? ZigBee?)
+ Maximum battery life (Rechargeable? Disposable? 3 months of life? 1 Year?) Battery life very important
+ Collect data at central point (Raspberry Pi?)
+ Cloud analytics (Plotly? Log entry?)

Any input appreciated! =D>

Data loss/throttling?

Does Electric Imp throttle outgoing data? I've been sending data from my Arduino/Imp001 to a logging/visualization service (Initial State) however sometimes up to half of the data is never logged. I'm making no more than 15 API calls per minute. I don't get any errors anywhere, the data just vanishes into the ether. The problem is also intermittent, sometimes most of my data gets logged sometimes less than half. I'm trying to figure out where the data is getting lost. I can see all the data in the imp console so I know it got from my device to the agent, but what happens afterwards, between Electric Imp's servers and Initial State's servers is a black hole. I'm beginning to think that the problem is with either Electric Imp or Initial State and that one or both are discarding/throttling data. Any way to find out who?

Any help or insights would be much appreciated.

Code Request - Tempbug multiple thermistors posting to Sparkfun

Just curious if anyone has a code sample I could review of a modified Instructables "tempbug" (with thermistors) posting multiple thermistor readings to Sparkfun, vs. just the 1 in the Instructable?

I'm pretty good at wiring and hand-soldering, but the more I thinker with the code, the more I am convinced I need to stick to hardware vs. code. Just too much a newbie on code.

From what I can tell, Sparkfun would be really easy if I could send every temp sample combined in one send, but the Instructables code is not set up that way. Unless I'm wrong, which is 95% possible.

If anyone has a few minutes to help, please do PM me. I could use a little guidance. I have a bunch of 2-3 year old imps which have come back to the workshop because the IOT online sites I was using all let me down. I know my days with 001 and 002 are over, but I'd like to at least get these imps back in the field monitoring solar thermal systems on a few key sites.

Thanks.

Monitor 1 Thermistor with 2 devices?

Just thinking out loud. Is it in any way possible to monitor 1 thermistor with 2 devices?

Say I have a solar hot water system with a roof sensor (thermistor) running to a controller in the mechanical room. What if I wanted to tap that line and have an Imp report to me via the internet the readings on the thermistor without interfering with the controller already in place?

Hi,

I am currently trying to bring up a custom imp005 based board. I have checked power supplies etc, but the LED's are alternating between amber and red, this combination is not listed anywhere that I can find. Does anyone have any ideas.

Many thanks

Major IDE UI Updates Coming Soon - UI that will scale with your products

Electric Imp Developers:

Electric Imp has been redesigning the IDE, which was initially debuted in 2012, to support enterprise customers who manage millions of devices and to provide them with easy access to all the new advanced product- and deployment-centric features we have added and are planning to add in future updates. Today marks another milestone of the redesign: we have replaced the left-navigation menu bar with a new top-down navigation system, which is a necessary step for us to rollout more improvements down the road.

If you check out our latest IDE Beta (https://beta-ide.electricimp.com) you will see that we have moved a lot of things around to make it simpler and easier to code. The IDE UI now has a simple three-part, top-down orientation, with general options, account settings, information and assistance at the top; account-related functionality in the Tab Bar below; and model-specific code, logs and production controls in the familiar workspace area beneath.

image

We have removed the model selection panel on the left-hand side. All of your models will be available via the ‘Models’ tab, which presents a list of models and relevant actions you can take. You can list your models by type — development, production, factory, inactive and so on — and order them by name, type, the number of devices assigned to them, and when they were last updated.

image

The models list, like the Tab Bar, is account-dependent. Select a shared account, for example, and the Tabs will update to present the functionality your role as a collaborator grants you. If you have access to one or more shared accounts, you continue to select one to view from the ‘account’ menu on the left-hand side of the Top Bar.

One of the model actions you can take is ‘Code’ — this presents the familiar code view. It’s here that you access the devices assigned to that model and view their logs in the usual way. That’s in addition to the Tab bar’s device search field.

image

What about unassigned devices? There’s a new item in the top-most bar — it has a chip icon — which puts a list of your unassigned devices and the current active account’s assigned devices in the workspace. You can assign one or more of them to any of the models in the currently active account, whether it’s your own or a shared account.

image

We’ve been using the new UI ourselves during its development and we think it will make as big a difference to your productivity as it has for us. But don’t take our word for it — try it out for yourself. We’ve made the new UI available on our public IDE Beta site and we’ll be keeping it there for a three-week period instead of the normal one-week duration. This gives you more time to fully explore the new UI and, we hope, give us your feedback.

As always, we welcome your comments, bug discoveries and thoughts, which we ask you to post in the Electric Imp Forum’s Beta channel.

Can I read a Load Cell value from Electric Imp?

$

I would like to connect a Load Cell to an Electric Imp and read the weight's value.

I have found quite a few of tutorials where a temperature sensor is attached to the Electric Imp (see: image) but for some reason when I see examples with Load Cell it seems that I have to use:
1. A load cell
2. A load cell amplifier (for example: XH711 - Sparkfun - Load Cell Amplifier)
3. A board (for example: Arduino mini pro - Sparkfun - Arduino Pro Mini)

My question is, can I just connect a load cell (or maybe a load cell amplifier) directly to the Electric Imp and read the value from there?

Thank you

Budweiser Red Light - 2 questions

1) I see discussion here about removing the imp -- how do you remove it and where is it? I don't see anything removable other than the battery cover.

2) It worked for last night's game, but it seems that after it goes to sleep it doesn't come back on again when I "test" it using the app. Hitting "test" in the app does nothing. Will it still wake itself up 5 min. before the next game?

Thanks.

Polite Deployments

I'm a little confused about polite deployments. Could someone clear it up?

I'm hoping for a feature that will only allow OS or Firmware upgrades during times I allow, but it seems that the feature does not do exactly that.

The docs (https://electricimp.com/docs/api/server/onshutdown/) seem hastly written at best so I'm unsure what to expect. Does "Note ‘New Squirrel’ restart requests are not yet supported so your code will note receive this reason code." mean that you intend to add this feature in the future? What does "New Squirrel is available" mean? Are you talking about squirrel firmware, language updates, ... something else?

Is there any way to test functionality around "SHUTDOWN_NEWFIRMWARE" or do I just hope that my code is correct?

What might cause a "SHUTDOWN_OTHER" event? When I ask the device to restart, my onshutdown handler is not called. What else will cause this to happen?

Given the state of the documentation, it's not clear to me that the feature has been thought out and finished. Should I be worried about building this into production code?

Is QUIC protocol on the radar?

Hi, just wondering if you'd noticed Google's QUIC protocol? It looks ideal between the imp and the imp server for reducing both the number packets and the number of round trips, when micro-joules matter.

IP Range for Agent?

$

We have gotten this question in all shapes and sizes from our vendors, but some get more hung up on the response than others. I know the IMP makes outbound connections only, but client is very concerned about the IP address they are connecting to outside their network. Here's their specific questions if it helps--we could really use some clarity on how to best answer these.

1. Firewall ports can only be opened if there are specific source and destination IP addresses built into the rule. We are not opening up ports 31314 and 993 to any IP address on the internet.

[Can you provide an IP address or even a range for agent.electricimp.com? I know it's variable...]

2. Inbound access should be avoided. But if unavoidable we need to understand:

[Is all this irrelevant because the connection is outbound only?]

a. Lock down from a specific source IP address only.

b. What is the landing interface for the remote management; Command prompt in clear text, or secure webservice or other?

c. Who manages the remote admin account details : Us or vendors

d. What level of access does the vendor have? Admin or user or custom

e. What logging is enabled to understand who logs in, when, and what they are doing?

Thanks!

agent connection

I've got an imp development kit (001 I think) I'm using for a weather station. Today I noticed that it's connected to the wifi and is sending/receiving data from the cloud but the IDE shows it as offline. Is there a log on the backend that someone has access to that will show why it's not talking to the agent anymore?

Budweiser Red Light App - Registration

Hello,
I recently purchased the Bud Red light and all is working as expected. I recently had to reinstall the app to my iPhone and the app continues to prompt for registration. I am already registered and the light is paired... While the light works, I am concerned that I will not be able to reconnect the light should I need to at a future point in time because the app will not allow me to get past registration. Anyone else encounter this issue? I have read where others have encountered the same issue but have found nothing in way of getting around this issue.

Scheduled downtime - WILL AFFECT IDE - tonight

For those of you who don't follow @impstatus...

---
Scheduled infrastructure maintenance 13-Dec-2016 at 03:00 UTC for 1.5 hours. We will be upgrading a portion of the databases to improved reliability and increase high availability.

There will be a brief period of unavailability for API, BlinkUp, and portions of the IDE. Currently connected and previously configured devices (devices not requiring BlinkUp to connect) will function as normal during the maintenance window.

This time window was chosen to minimize potential customer impact. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

http://status.electricimp.com/incidents/tpphy4hzfhk3
---

Note that connected devices should not be affected, and the period that IDE, blinkup, API etc will not be available should be brief (much smaller than the maintenance window). However, it's 100% guaranteed that those services will be offline for some short period of time.

Marked increase in disconnections

Has there been anything happening over the past couple of days that could have contributed to a big increase in imp disconnections? Our devices are permanently connected and I monitor the tally of disconnects/reconnects of devices. It usually sits at an acceptable level, but has jumped 4-fold over the past 3 days. Is the Internet straining under the weight of everyone tracking the delivery of their presents?
